My second half marathon of the year is going to be at the Freedom’s Run Half Marathon in Shepherdstown, WV on September 30th, 2017. Why am I going to West Virginia? The answer is easy: What this race stands for an how it became to be is exactly what I want to embody through my running life.
The history of this race starts with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella.
Not only is he a Family Medicine physician, a professor of medicine at WVU’s School of Medicine and owner of Two River Treads – A Center for Natural Running and Walking, he is a competitive runner of over 30 years completing more than 100 marathon and ultramarathon finishes! Dr. Mark created this race to bring his mission of healthy movement to his hometown of Shepherdstown, WV and to encourage the people of WV and the entire country to come join in! This is exactly what I want to stand for and show through my running. I want to encourage those who think they can’t and even those who can! I’ve only been running a little more than a year now and as one of those people who thought they couldn’t – here I am now! And I CAN!
This is not your *run* of the mill course. It travels along the C&O Canal after crossing the Potomac River where it then joins the marathon course to run the hills of the Antietam Battleground. In total the course has a 945ft climb! ATTACK THE HILL(s)!
This was a tough decision for me. I’m not much of a climber! I love my flat races. The majority of my racing has been in Philadelphia and tiny little bridge climbs felt like a task at mile 22 of my first marathon. Time to step it up a notch! Bring it! This will definitely be a challenge but also a motivator to seek out more local hills to train on! Plus, look at the gorgeous scenery along the way!
